French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni has told how she gets around Paris on public transport – disguised in a wig.

The former supermodel made the revelation in a political interview as she tried to boost her husband’s fading re-election hopes.

“With a wig, nobody recognises me on the Metro,” the First Lady told a magazine. “Recently, my bag was still searched on a visit to the Marine Museum.

“I disguise myself literally as well as figuratively.”

Asked if she thought being the President’s wife was a difficult job, 44-year-old Carla said: “Not really.

“It took me some time to get used to this role and I make the best I can of it without getting political.”

She admitted she was not much use whenever Sarkozy asked her what she thought about his policies.

“I am unable to give an opinion. I pity him,” she said. “I know my limits.”
